Woody and Buzz have faced moving vans, yard sales and a very large incinerator. In Toy Story 5, the new arrival is a tablet named Lilypad. Disney describes the film as “Toy meets Tech”: Bonnie’s toys find their jobs challenged by a device with its own ideas about playtime. Andrew Stanton directed, with Kenna Harris as co-director, and Randy Newman returned to score his fifth Toy Story feature.
The film opened in June and is now available on Disney+. That makes the central question easy to revisit at home. The series has always understood that being loved can be both a gift and a source of anxiety for a toy. A screen changes the room, but does it change that feeling?
There is a neat irony in watching a story about competing for a child’s attention on a device that also competes for ours.
