The Coast to Coast Path is now listed by Natural England as a National Trail. Its 190 miles run from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire, crossing the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks. The route follows the journey made famous by Alfred Wainwright.
No one has to walk all 190 miles to get the point. Natural England suggests individual sections and local circular walks as well as the full crossing. That makes the trail less of a single endurance test and more of a shelf of possible days: coast, mountain, moor, village, then another story around the next bend.
The trail is open year-round, though some high-level sections can be difficult in winter or bad weather. Pick a section that suits the season, check local conditions, and let the map be the beginning of the adventure rather than the whole script.
