NASA’s October skywatching guide points to a close-looking encounter between the Moon and the Pleiades star cluster on 27 and 28 October. The Pleiades are also called the Seven Sisters, though how many stars you can pick out depends on the sky and your eyesight.
This is an adventure that can begin a few steps from home. Find a safe spot with an open view, give your eyes time to adjust and look for the tight little gathering of stars near the Moon. Binoculars may show more, but the interesting part is already visible without making the night complicated: an ancient cluster, our nearest companion and a brief arrangement that will look different tomorrow.
Clouds and local viewing conditions will decide the view. If the sky cooperates, take a minute before reaching for the camera. Some maps are better made in memory.
